Starting tomorrow, we will be in the single digits of the countdown to kickoff. The Longhorns face the Colorado State Rams on August 31 at 2:30 p.m. in Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium.

But first, a look at the players wearing Nos. 14-10 on the Longhorns and a salute to some of the program’s best.
Butler, a late add to the 2024 class who was once committed to Deion Sanders and Colorado, will bring an element of quality speed and athleticism to the room during his career. A number of receivers are ahead of Butler, so this year will most likely be spent developing.
What is true for Butler is also true for Livingstone. A future boundary wide receiver, Livingstone will more than likely spend the 2024 campaign developing and preparing to offer contributions in the coming seasons.
Cole’s career has been a story of him winning bets placed upon himself. He transferred up from Cal Poly to San Jose State where he was one of the best corners not just in the Group of Five, but in all of college football. He chose Texas after flirting with Michigan State and Auburn, and joined the experienced defensive back room.
Stiff competition at corner may limit Cole’s opportunities on standard downs, but he may be one of the go-to players on the Longhorns’ special teams possibly at gunner.
No. 12 – Retired for Colt McCoy
McCoy was a two-time All-American, a two-time Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year, a two-time Heisman Finalist, the 2009 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, the 2009 Maxwell Award winner, and the 2009 Davey O’Brien Award winner.
He set numerous records during his career. He’s the school’s all-time leader in completions (1157), attempts (1645), yards (13253), completion percentage (70.3), and touchdowns (112). He has single game school records for yards (470), completions (41), and touchdowns (6). He has single season records for completions (332, twice), touchdown passes (34), and yards (3859). McCoy took the torch from another Longhorn legend at QB and became a legend himself.
A five-star according to every service, Simmons was one of the biggest wins for the Longhorns during the 2024 cycle and he finished as the highest-rated player in Texas’ signing class. Speed and quickness are Simmons’ top traits, and those attributes will create plenty of opportunities for the freshman from Duncanville in his first season on the 40 Acres.
There are veterans at his Buck position like Trey Moore and even others like Ethan Burke and Justice Finkley . Simmons will find a way to the field often for standard down looks, but his best snaps in 2024 might be when he gets to pin his ears back and attack the quarterback.
Bruce is a walk-on from Boerne. Since he shares numbers with Simmons, someone who fans can expect to see plenty of action this year, not much is expected of Bruce as far as 2024 playing time. He’ll contribute to the Longhorns as a scout teamer.
No player has been talked about more during preseason camp than Bolden, a transfer from Oregon State. Arguably limited by DJ Uiagalelei with the Beavers, Bolden doesn’t have such a limitation with Quinn Ewers throwing him the ball. As a result, Bolden has surged to the top of the depth chart and will be one of the Longhorns’ go-to players in the passing game in 2024.
The quarterback of the most recent national champion Longhorn team, Young was the Heisman runner-up in 2005 but ended up with the more important trophy in the end. He earned the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien Award in 2005 along with first-team All-America and Big 12 offensive player of the year honors. He was 30-2 as a starter and holds multiple school records including his 81 total touchdowns.

Young will forever be remembered for his 467 total yard, three touchdown game against the USC Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl. His 4th-and-5 scamper with 19 seconds left put the Longhorns ahead of a USC team many claimed was one of the best ever. Young, one of the best college football players ever, cemented his place in the history of the sport in January 2006.
