The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its fall weather forecast , and the outlook is mixed for Illinois, and particularly for the Peoria area.

The almanac divides the Prairie State among three different regions, all of which have very different predictions. Peoria is roughly on the border between two of those areas — the Lower Lakes and Heartland regions. Here's what the Old Farmer predicts for Illinois:

    Eastern Illinois fall weather outlook

The Lower Lakes region includes much of the eastern half of Illinois. Its autumn outlook includes cooler than average temperatures and below-average precipitation.

    Western Illinois fall weather outlook

The Heartland region incorporates most of western Illinois from the Wisconsin border approximately to St. Louis. Its fall forecast is for warmer than average temperatures and below-average precipitation.

    Southern Illinois fall weather outlook

The Ohio Valley region includes roughly the bottom third of Illinois. Its autumn outlook calls for below-average temperatures and above-average precipitation.

The rest of the nation's fall weather prognostication

Overall, the Old Farmer's Almanac foresees a warmer than average autumn for much of the United States, including most areas west of the Mississippi River. Much of the eastern part of the country can expect below-average temperatures, the Farmer says, while the Northeast, Deep South and Upper Midwest regions can expect average temperatures.

    About the almanac

The Old Farmer's Almanac claims 80% accuracy in its long-range predictions. It says it employs solar science, climatology and meteorology in its seasonal forecasts. The almanac dates to 1792.

Is the Old Farmer's Almanac trustworthy?

A University of Illinois study conducted in 2010, cited by Popular Mechanics in 2022, found the Old Farmer's Almanac only about 52% accurate — "essentially random chance."
