The Phoenix Mercury received crucial injury updates ahead of their clash with the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
Head coach Nate Tibbetts expressed optimism , telling Desert Wave Media, "We're leaning towards having everyone which would be great, besides the ones that are listed as out. They're gonna warm up. The hope is that all of them will play."
Brittney Griner, Natasha Cloud and Diana Taurasi are all listed as probable for the upcoming game.
Mercury guard Natasha Cloud (0) celebrates a forced turnover against the Mystics during a game at the Footprint Center in Phoenix on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Griner, who has been battling a right hip injury, has missed significant time this season but has shown resilience. She has averaged 18.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 13 games.
After missing the first 10 games of the season with a toe fracture to her left foot, Griner was forced to exit during the early stages of the Mercury’s last game vs. the Indiana Fever on Friday, she collided with Fever guard Lexie Hull. The 6-foot-9 center limped slowly to the bench before being ruled out for the rest of the game.
Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner (42) celebrates after a three point basket against the Seattle Storm during the first quarter at Footprint Center in Phoenix on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Cloud, dealing with a left knee issue, has also been a consistent performer, posting 12.5 points, 7.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game (h/t Alec Cipollini of Burn City Sports).
Taurasi, recovering from a lower left leg injury, has been upgraded to probable after missing the last four games.
Charisma Osborne and Sug Sutton, however, have been ruled out. Osborne has played just two games this season, averaging one points, while Sutton has struggled with multiple injuries throughout the season.
All players listed as probable will warm up before the team makes a final decision.
The Mercury are seeking their first win of the season against the Sun, who have won both previous matchups.
