PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Daytime cooling shelters are opening up across the Portland, Vancouver and Salem metro areas on Friday amid an ongoing heat wave across the region, which is expected to see triple-digit temperatures starting Friday.

The National Weather Service’s excessive heat warning started on Thursday, July 4 at noon and is expected to last until Monday, July 8 at 8 p.m.

Officials say forecasts are calling for “dangerously hot conditions with temperatures 100 to 105 expected.” Temperatures aren’t expected to cool off much either after the excessive heat warning expires, according to KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart .

However, the cooling center at The Hugo (6221 NE 82nd in Portland) will not reopen because of issues with the HVAC system. Staff will be on-site at the Hugo into the evening to redirect people to an open cooling center. Transportation will be available.
