MLB Home Run Derby: Pete Alonso Eyes Third Crown, Despite Star-Studded Field

Pete Alonso is poised to make MLB Home Run Derby history on Monday night.

The New York Mets star first baseman and four-time All-Star would become the only player to win the event three times since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1999.

While the new rule changes could play an early factor, Alonso's experience and unique adoration for the Derby are what make him the Captain America of the competition.

Alonso is no stranger to making history at the All-Star festivities. In his last Home Run Derby title in 2019, he clobbered a record-breaking 35 HRs in Round 1. It's difficult to expect those totals from any hitter this year, as there is no longer a bracket or seeding until the semifinals.

Look for more fireworks later in the evening at Globe Life Field.

While Alonso enters the 2024 Home Run Derby as the public favorite, his victory will certainly not come easy. MVP candidates Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. are making their highly-anticipated debuts, along with the power-hitting Atlanta Brave Marcell Ozuna, and the Texas Rangers' hometown representative Adolis Garcia are all going to be amped up from the start.

Alonso has history on his side. He just needs to do what he does best to get the job done.
