ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Every fourth Tuesday of the month at the Gates Fire Department, certified car seat inspectors help make sure parents and caregivers are safely transporting their precious cargo.

First responders say car seat instructions often get lost, or parents have questions, and the majority of those who stop by realize they are using the car seat incorrectly.

They also say many parents buy additional items to entertain the baby or make them comfortable, but those items may be unsafe.

“There’s a lot of aftermarket products for car seats that are not approved by the car seat manufactures,” Gates Fire District Community Risk Reduction Specialist Kalliopi Lang said. “f you have extra things you want to put in like padding or toys or covers make sure its approved by the car seat manufacturer that you have, and if its an after market product its probably not going to be approved.”

First responders also encouraged parents to write health details about their child on a sticker, such as allergies — anything a first responder may need to know in the event they’re unable to communicate with an adult in an emergency.
