ST. LOUIS – Seniors within the City of St. Louis have the opportunity again to apply for the senior tax freeze program beginning Thursday.

New legislation now allows applications from those who were not previously eligible for the program, which included those who were eligible for Social Security retirement benefits. Those who held professions such as teachers, firefighters, and railroad workers were not able to apply. Senate Bill 756 lifted those limitations.

“With thousands of applications already submitted, we’re excited to expand eligibility for the senior property tax freeze to all residents 62 and older,” Alderman Michael Browning, who filed Board Bill 74 , said. “St. Louis will be among the first cities to incorporate this change, offering much needed relief to seniors in our city.”

The application for the tax freeze closes Aug. 31. Those interested can apply online with the City of St. Louis Assessor’s Office, with a paper form, or in person at their office. Eligible seniors can repeat this process every year, starting Jan. 1 through the June 30 deadline.

“We want our older residents to age in place without the fear of being priced out of their neighborhood as we build a stronger St. Louis,” St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones said. “I hope eligible seniors will take advantage of this additional opportunity to apply.”

Taxes are frozen strictly for real estate. It is not applied to vehicles, public schools, libraries, museums, or any other personal property.
