    Thursday fire extinguished at Freightliner

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Community Volunteer Fire Department was called into action on Thursday in response to a fire at the Daimler Freightliner facility.

The department’s chief, Kenny Payne, said that they arrived on the scene, located at 11550 Statesville Boulevard, at 10:54 a.m. after a call came in about a fire in the second floor paint booth room of the 400 building.

Payne indicated although the fire was largely contained to that room but that smoldering in a drainage mechanism proved difficult to access to combat.

“It was pretty well contained to the paint booth, it just took a while to get to the grid,” Payne said.

Gaining access to that space reportedly required a maintenance team to pull up the floor before fire crews could extinguish the flames with foam.

The fire did prompt sprinkler activation and resulted in significant damage to a robotic arm but no personnel injuries were reported.

As of Thursday afternoon, the scene had been cleared but remained under investigation by the Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office. If new details become available this story will be updated.
