SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Fatal Accident Crash Team is looking for a hit-and-run suspect after a man was found in a ditch.

Officers and medics were called to the 61000 block of Locust Road around 8:04 a.m. Aug. 28 after a 911 caller discovered a man, identified as 53-year-old Daryl M. Payne of South Bend, lying in a ditch, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office said in a press release.

An initial FACT investigation showed Payne was struck by a vehicle traveling south that left the scene, the press release said. Investigators are currently searching for a vehicle description and a suspect, the prosecutor's office said.

St. Joseph County FACT asks that anyone with information that could help with the ongoing investigation contact Capt. Tim Spencer at 574-235-7818, ext. 7112.
