Severe Thunderstorms Capable of Producing Tornadoes For San Diego County Possible Tonight

Site: Southern California Weather Force has upgraded the Thunderstorm Watch to a Tornado Watch for the zones listed above.

Date Issued: 12/21/23 at 3:00pm local

Forecast: A rare cutoff low is moving into the region this evening, and it will bring extremely strong upper lift dynamics. This will start a bit after 9pm and go into the night for the forecast region. Instability parameters are enough to warrant surface warm air rising.

With the combination of this instability at the surface and aloft, along with surface convergence, the storms that move through this area will produce severe thunderstorms capable of high winds, lightning, flooding, hail, and the works.

In addition to this, the backing southeast flow east of the surface low between the hours of 9pm and 5am will give low-level shear, which is what is needed for a tornado.

This is an upgrade from the Thunderstorm Watch issued earlier.
