Patriots gifted backup 'needs a change of scenery'; should Packers pursue?

The Green Bay Packers know what they have in Jordan Love, but they're not well-prepared for if Love misses time.

Neither of Green Bay's two backup candidates for Love has impressed during training camp, which has prompted reports that the Packers should look into acquiring Taylor Heinicke of the Atlanta Falcons as a more serviceable QB2.

Heinicke would be nice, but another viable -- and perhaps more interesting -- option for Green Bay at backup quarterback is Bailey Zappe of the New England Patriots.

Zappe looked solid in New England's preseason debut on Saturday, going 12-of-20 for 104 yards.

The problem for Zappe in New England is that he's highly unlikely to see any meaningful action this season stuck behind both Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye on the depth chart.

Zappe would have greater opportunities in a place like Green Bay, where he'd legitimately compete for the backup role, not to mention be joining a football team with higher potential in 2024 than the Patriots.

Conveniently, Zappe was recently featured in a piece by Bleacher Report's David Kenyon entitled, "QBs That NFL Teams Must Pursue in Trades Right Now".

"Following two years of chaos with the New England Patriots, Bailey Zappe needs a change of scenery," Kenyon said.

"Brissett may open the campaign as the starter, but Maye—whether this season or next—will be the next man up. That leaves Zappe in a third-string position with little opportunity to rise the depth chart."

"Zappe's ideal spot would be a place he can compete to supplant a veteran QB2."

Will Packers GM Brian Gutekunst prepare an offer for a player like Zappe, or will one of Green Bay's current backup options (Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt) step up and render such a move unnecessary?
