Cardinals right-hander gives promising update on injury recovery

The St. Louis Cardinals have been without a key member of their starting rotation for the past few weeks.

Right-hander Lance Lynn beat the Texas Rangers on July 30 with a five-inning, one-run performance and subsequently went on the injured list with right knee inflammation. Fortunately for St. Louis, it doesn't look like he's done for the year.

On Foul Territory , Lynn revealed that he is taking steps towards returning.

"I've got a bullpen today so we're getting back on the mound, intensity-wise seeing where we're at," Lynn said. "Hopefully, that leads to a better idea of when I can be back."

This is good news for the Cardinals, who will need to make some changes with their rotation soon. While Sonny Gray, Erick Fedde, Kyle Gibson, and Andre Pallante have all pitched well, Miles Mikolas has struggled.

When Lynn comes back, the Cardinals could potentially insert him back into their rotation and move Mikolas, who owns a 5.30 ERA to the bullpen.

The 37-year-old right-hander was signed to a one-year, $10 million contract in the offseason to fill a hole and rotation along with Gibson and Gray, who were signed to separate deals.

The Cardinals were hoping to receive more innings from their starters, and Lynn has historically been an innings-eater.

Perhaps if back healthy, he could do just that for the team's rotation. We'll see how his recovery goes and if he'll return soon.
