The National League West is one of the toughest divisions in Major League Baseball this season. The division currently has three teams that would qualify for a spot in the postseason and one that could still sneak in as a Wild Card.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lead the pack with the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres tied for a close second and in possession of the first two Wild Card spots. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants are 10 games out of first place, but only 2 1/2 back of the final Wild Card spot.

On Foul Territory , Levi Weaver of The Athletic discussed the possibility of all four teams reaching the postseason.

"It is doable. The Diamondbacks and Padres have looked really for last two weeks," Weaver said. "It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that the entire NL Wild Card looked like a crapshoot and there were like nine teams that were on their way in. The Giants are the only team that is not the Diamondbacks or the Padres that has a winning a record in their last 10 games."

Weaver certainly seems to think it's possible for the NL West to send four teams to the postseason. Not counting the 2020 season, which shortened to 60 games, no division has ever sent more than three teams to the postseason.

With three Wild Cards in each league now, it is certainly possible that four teams in a division could reach the playoffs. The Giants are playing the best baseball out of all the Wild Card contenders in the National League aside from San Diego and Arizona, as Weaver pointed out. The St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, and New York Mets are all slumping at the moment.

But it will be interesting to see if the Giants can pull it off and sneak into the postseason as the final Wild Card team.
