3 fridges, gym and decade-old ice cream sandwich: Firefighters make new Station 7 home
Where once stood the original Fire Station 7 built in 1958, the ribbon was cut for a brand new one at 2129 E. Sunshine St. on Tuesday afternoon. Fire Station 7 located on the border of the Brentwood and Oak Grove neighborhoods is home to three shifts, each usually staffed with three firefighters. Springfield Fire Chief David Pennington said the rebuilding of the fire station cost roughly $4.2 million and was covered by the Level Property Tax that was renewed by voters in 2017. The almost 70-year-old station was demolished March 2023 with the firefighters moving into Fire Station 3 while work was completed on the new station.
C-Street advocates hold brainstorming session for Jefferson Avenue Footbridge reopening
The session was originally set to happen at the Footbridge Pavilion but was moved to Historic Firehouse No. 2 due to heat. There, members of the public shared their ideas for the footbridge’s opening celebration, set for Spring 2026, as well as ongoing programming and improvements in the surrounding RailYards area. Ideas ranged from bringing in local bands to installing bathrooms to structuring the celebration across multiple weekends.
New facility to help youth aging out of foster care is being built in Springfield
A new construction project in Springfield will provide help for young people aging out of the foster care program. The Good Samaritan Boys Ranch is planning to build a 5,000-square-foot facility for office and warehouse space. It will be a place where young adults in the foster care system can access furniture, life skills training and relational support. The idea is to create a home environment that promotes security and well-being, according to the nonprofit.
