Girls hoops clinch playoffs spot with 37-20 win over Falmouth Academy
( Feb. 9, 2024 ) The girls basketball team clinched a playoff spot and the Cape & Islands League Lighthouse Division title with Friday’s 37-20 win against Falmouth Academy. The victory improved the Whalers’ record on the season to 10-7, which guarantees them a .500 record and qualifies them for the DIv. 4 state tournament.
Boys hoops qualify for playoffs with win
( Feb. 1, 2024 ) The boys basketball team officially qualified for the Div. 4 state tournament with Tuesday’s 58-43 win over Monomoy, which helped erase the bad taste of a weekend doubleheader Friday at South Hadley and Saturday at Millbury that saw back-to-back double-digit losses for the Whalers.
Art scholarship in memory of Kathleen Duncombe
( Jan. 29, 2024 ) A new fine-arts scholarship for Nantucket High School graduates is available through the Community Foundation for Nantucket. Called the Shredder’s Studio Art Scholarship, it was created in memory of Kathleen Duncombe, a longtime island artist, volunteer and owner of the Made on Nantucket gallery.
Boys hoops rack up three more wins this week
( Jan. 25, 2024 ) The boys basketball team has found its stride as the schedule moves into the second half of the regular season. The Whalers won three more games this past week – beating Nauset 70-50 last Thursday, New Heights Charter School of Brockton 74-68 Saturday and Cape Cod Academy 65-36 Tuesday – improving their record to 9-4.

(Jan. 22, 2024) Missing multiple key contributors, the boys basketball team still found a way to pull out a 74-68 win Saturday at home against New Heights Charter School of Brockton, thanks to the Whalers’ bench and a dominant performance from Jack Halik.
Hot start lifts boys hoops to 70-50 win over Nauset
( Jan. 18, 2024 ) The boys basketball team jumped out to a 20-5 lead Thursday against Nauset and never looked back, running away with a 70-50 win over the Warriors. Nantucket set a new season-high in points with the victory, but it was the Whalers’ defense that really shined. Nantucket forced turnovers on each of Nauset’s first five possessions, trapping the Warriors’ ball handlers with relentless pressure.
Maria Mitchell Association launches after-school, winter break programs
( Jan. 18, 2024 ) The Maria Mitchell Association will host an after-school program this winter and a full week of activities over February’s winter break. The after-school program is a multi-week series of activities and is day specific with the option for multiple days per week that explores Nantucket Island after school. Each afternoon holds different activities, crafts and adventures. Tuesdays are a six-week series running Jan. 16, 23, 30 and Feb. 6, 13 and 20. Wednesdays are a four-week series running Jan. 17, 31, Feb. 7 and 21 (Jan. 24 and Feb. 14 are early-release days). Thursdays are a six-week series running Jan. 18 and 25, and Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22.
Girls hoops top CCA 35-30 for second-straight win
( Jan. 11, 2024 ) The girls basketball team played suffocating defense to earn their second win in a row Thursday, holding on to a 35-30 victory against a Cape Cod Academy team that beat the Whalers by 20 points in their season opener.
