Newport awards contract for demolition work
A contract for the demolition of buildings on three different sites in Newport was awarded recently by the Newport City Council, acting in its capacity as the Local Contract Review Board. The property had been acquired by the Newport Urban Renewal Agency for the purpose of redevelopment, and in preparation for that to happen, existing structures at those locations need to be removed. The contract for the work was awarded...
Letter: Thank you, Newport!
I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the entire city of Newport, as well as all who attended the Newport Loyalty Days Parade and the events surrounding this amazing event for the local community. With both the parade entrants as well as those watching through the rain and heavy mist — a persistent part of the parade — fun was had by all. Thank you to the volunteers who worked hard to bring the parade and surrounding events to a successful conclusion....
LCSD budget tightens following declining enrollment
Budget adjustments are in the works as the Lincoln County School District Budget Committee reviews a proposed $89,737,618 general fund budget submitted by LCSD Superintendent Majalise Tolan, which includes staffing reductions reflecting declining enrollment and higher operating coats. State school funding is primarily based on student enrollment. Fewer students results in less state funding. The enrollment reduction will affect the district in 2025-26 unless enrollment projections increase next year. The largest enrollment losses are in the primary grades, specifically kindergarten, according to Tolan. ...

It has been a far longer process than most people expected, but a new Lincoln County Animal Shelter is another step closer to reality. The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, May 8, awarded a bid for construction of the new shelter, which will be located in Waldport. Brian Gardner, assistant county counsel, told commissioners that three construction firms were interviewed by the county’s selection team on April 24. “All the teams were very impressive. We would have been lucky to have any of...
House Republican leader, whose district includes Gresham and Sandy, used minor ballot delivery delay to question election integrity
Oregon’s House Republican leader sent state election officials scrambling the week of May 13, after he used a minor delay in delivering mailed ballots to clerks in two counties to raise doubts about the integrity of the state’s voting system. Rep. Jeff Helfrich’s district includes Gresham and Sandy. Tuesday, May 21, is Oregon’s statewide primary election. The short delays county clerks in Douglas and Lincoln counties experienced were caused by...
New manager, new directions for Newport’s historic cemetery
Newport’s historic Eureka Cemetery & Mausoleum, serving the local community for over a century, recently welcomed a new manager and has embarked upon exciting fresh programs. Long-time Newport resident Deborah Miller took over as manager in February when Kharizma McAnulty accepted a new position, though she remains as a public member of the nonprofit group. Miller has a degree in journalism and worked as a reporter before joining the county school district as communications director for six years. From there, she spent four years with...
