NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – It has been a “grantiful” year for the borough so far. Mayor Al Morgan noted at the Tuesday, Aug. 13 Borough Council meeting that the borough has received just shy of $2 million of grant money this year with a few applications still pending.

At the Tuesday meeting the council added several grants received into the budget. Among them were a $65,000 Community Block Development Grant (CDBG) for the elevator installation at the Barabash Manor Senior Housing Building. Another CDBG of $15,000 was received for senior citizen public service and high-risk health care program. A Green Acres Grant of $750,000 will be allocated to the Oakwood Park playground improvement project. The Local Recreational Improvement Grant of $74,000 will also be used for the Oakwood Park playground project. The borough also received a Safe Routes To School Grant of $534,000.

The council also approved two grant applications. The borough will be applying The Christopher And Dana Reeve Foundation Grant of $24,000 to cover the cost of a wheelchair accessible rocker feature to be placed at the Oakwood Park playground. The borough is also seeking the NJ Department of Human Services Age-Friendly Grant of $100,000 for the purchase of a mini-bus for the DeCorso Center.

Morgan and the members of the council expressed their gratitude to borough employees who are seeking a variety of grants to cover the costs of various projects. Councilman Matthew Cumiskey noted that the borough does not have a grant writer, instead the department heads and employees are researching available grants in addition to their other tasks.
