UPDATE at 3:38 p.m. on Aug. 23: Court records show Tamika Garrett was sentenced to six months in state jail for her DWI with children.

WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A mother convicted after driving drunk with her pants down and her kids in the car in a Walmart parking lot loses her probation after numerous violations, including repeatedly drinking alcohol and driving with a suspended license.

Woman awaiting trial for abuse, no show in court

Tamika Garrett, 34, was on 3 years probation for DWI with children in the car and prosecutors say she violated her agreement dozens of ways, including drinking bottles of whiskey and other alcohol, driving a vehicle with no license or intoxication interlock device, failing to report to the probation officer for numerous months, not paying her court fees, not attending alcohol intervention and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and many more.

Court records show she was convicted on the revocation motion today, but her new sentence is not yet on record.

Despite the repeated violations since being on probation, Garrett claimed in a letter to the judge she is not a bad mother and pleaded for him not to send her to jail and separate her from her children.

Officials say she failed to show up for her first plea hearing in 2021 and was arrested.

In May 2020, Garrett was found in a parked car with the engine running in front of the Walmart on Greenbriar Road. Police say she had driven over a sign and then continued driving around the parking lot.

When officers arrived on the scene, Garrett was in the passenger seat with her pants down around her ankles and her children, ages 2 and 5, in the back seat.

She claimed her husband was driving the car and was inside shopping, despite witnesses telling police Garrett was behind the wheel. Her husband arrived at the scene and denied driving and told officers his wife had been drinking a brown liquor earlier.

Officers said when Garrett got out, she kept falling against the side of the car. They attempted a field sobriety test, but she said she could not stay on her feet.

In her letter to the judge, after prosecutors filed to revoke her probation for all the violations, which included numerous admissions of drinking whiskey and positive urine tests for alcohol, Garrett begged for leniency and understanding, saying she turned to alcohol at a young age due to sexual abuse.

She said she would never intentionally put her children in harm’s way, but that is what happened after a night of drinking and domestic disturbance.

She said she was truly trying to complete her probation successfully and that she was not a criminal. She said it kills her to be in jail away from her kids, who are her world. She said if the judge would give her more time served or reinstate her probation, she would not let him down and give her a “second chance.”

However, Judge Jeff McKnight also sentenced her to 90 days in jail for her arrest for a hit-and-run in May 2022, one month into her probation.
