A product of Russell High School in northeastern Kentucky and Marshall University in West Virginia, Nathan McPeek had only heard through the grapevine about the reputation of high school football in Lexington when he became Frederick Douglass’ first offensive coordinator in 2017.

    It wasn’t good.

“The image of Lexington was there’s all kind of talented kids in Lexington,” McPeek told our Jason Frakes , “but they didn’t have the discipline and work ethic.”

Now in his eighth season overall and fifth as head coach at Frederick Douglass , McPeek has turned the program into one of the state’s best and helped turn Lexington into a factory for college football talent.

As McPeek’s Broncos get set to host Trinity at 7:30 p.m. today in a matchup of elite programs (livestream on the NFHS Network ), Frederick Douglass holds the upper hand in at least one measurement.

In a Courier Journal study of the 2024 rosters for all 134 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams, Frederick Douglass has the most alumni of any school in Kentucky with 17. Trinity ranks second with 10 and is followed by Bowling Green and St. Xavier with six apiece.

Our Prince James Story will be at Ballard tonight for its game against Male. Other big games today involving Louisville-area teams include DeSales at North Oldham, Collins at Spencer County and Central at St. Xavier.

Before you head out to watch your favorite team, be sure to check out some of our work from earlier this week:
