Roach Festival

Prayer Flags workshop

Kelly Cameron will lead a prayer flag workshop in the Madrin Studio at Arts of the Albemarle from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will use fabrics, lace, trim, buttons, and more to make their very own 9-inch by 12-inch prayer flag. Cost is $50 per person. Get tickets at artsaoa.events.

The Camden Center for Active Adults will host a cooking demonstration and tasting event at 10 a.m.

Legends and Lore

Elizabeth City Downtown Inc., Visit Elizabeth City, the Elizabeth City Historic Neighborhood Association and local businesses will team up to host the second annual Legends and Lore event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s mystery clue-based scavenger hunt will center around the legend of local bootlegger Alvin Sawyer and tie into Museum of the Albemarle’s status as one of the stops on the state of North Carolina’s new Moonshine and Motorsports Trail.

2nd Dog Festival

The Perquimans Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual Dog Festival at the Perquimans County Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Museum of the Albemarle will host its monthly History for Lunch program at noon. Dr. J. Timothy Allen, professor of humanities at Strayer University, will be the presenter for the program, “Early Coastal North Carolina Quakers and Slavery.” He will discuss early North Carolina Quakers’ attitudes toward slavery and how and why they progressed from being enslavers to advocating for manumission.

‘Mamma Mia’

The ECPPS Theatre will present performances of “Mamma Mia!,” the 1999 musical that’s chock full of popular songs by the Swedish super group ABBA. The 29th annual TarWheel Cycling Event will be held on a scenic, flat, countryside course through Pasquotank and Perquimans counties Saturday, April 20, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Riders start at Dog Corner Park at 600 Southern Avenue in Elizabeth City and have the option of taking either a 33-, 64-, or 100-mile ride. ‘EINSTEIN! — Celebrating 100 Years of General Relativity’

“EINSTEIN! — Celebrating 100 Years of General Relativity,” an 85-minute one-person play telling the story of a young Albert Einstein and his struggle to prove his Theory of Relativity, will be performed at College of The Albemarle’s Performing Arts Center April 20 and 22 at 7 p.m. nightly. Easels in the Gardens

Easels in the Gardens, an event sponsored by the Cupola House Association, will feature tours of 10 private and four public gardens, including the newly opened historic Gardens at Hayes, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both April 26 and 27. Plein air artists will be stationed in each garden both days and an “Art In Bloom” exhibit will be displayed at the Chowan Arts Council. Bocce, Beer, & Bites

The Albemarle Area United Way will host its annual Bocce, Beer & Bites event at Waterfront Park in Elizabeth City Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The early bird price for four-person teams is $200, which includes a lunch from Currituck BBQ, two craft beers from Ghost Harbor Brewing, and a Kona Shaved Ice for each team members. Spectator tickets are $30 per ticket, which includes lunch, craft beers and Kona Shaved Ice.

Sounds of Soul

The Elizabeth City State University Choir and Studio 137 will perform for the Sounds of Soul concert at the Maguire Theater Saturday, April 27, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Studio 137 is an ensemble of applied voice students under the direction of Dr. Walter R. Spring Garden Show

The Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chowan, Gates and Perquimans counties will hold their annual Spring Garden Show at the Perquimans County Recreation Center at 310 Granby St., Hertford, Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show features vendors and exhibitors marketing garden-related goods and services, a children’s garden for activities, raffles, an Ask a Master Gardener booth, and a plant sale. Paddle for the Border

The 19th annual Paddle for the Border canoeing/kayaking event will launch from the canal bridge at the Dismal Swamp State Park in South Mills Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. Participants will paddle 7.5 miles along the Dismal Swamp Canal to the Ballahack Boat Ramp in Chesapeake, Virginia. The event is sold out.

Run with Mary 5K

The Run with Mary 5K for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness is a 5K fundraiser that honors Mary Morrison Gillam, a Camden County mother of three and runner who died from pancreatic cancer. Runners will start from Waterfront Park May 11 at 10 a.m. The entry fee is $35 and all proceeds go to cancer research at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where Gillam received care. NC Potato Festival

The three-day 2024 NC Potato Festival will be held in downtown Elizabeth City will be held May 17-19.
