ADRIAN — Downtown Adrian on Friday, Sept. 6, will be the gathering spot for several groups of people including motorcycle riders and delegation members from Adrian’s sister city , Moriyama, Japan.

This Friday, Sept. 6, is the first Friday of the month, meaning Adrian will welcome guests of all ages downtown for festivities, activities, shopping deals and discounts in correlation with the September edition of First Fridays.

This month’s theme is “Bike Night” and features a visit from Phil Comar , the “No Hands Man,” who holds the world record for the longest motorcycle ride with no hands at 680 miles. Comar has conducted such daring and dazzling rides for several years for the benefit and support of bringing awareness to Parkinson’s disease research.

While downtown for “Bike Night,” there will be motorcycle contests, giveaways, live music with Bad Mojo and more, a news release from the city of Adrian said. All events featuring motorcycles start at 6 p.m. including slow races, a boardwalk competition and a basketball throw.

Vendors including Tecumseh Harley Davidson, Michigan Biker Law, Misfit Patch Co., Lenawee County Sheriff Motorcycle Division, LISD Riding Academy, and the Adrian City Market will be stationed throughout the downtown.

The entrance for motorcycles only to downtown Adrian will be at South Main and East Church streets, the city said.

“This is a one-way entrance; motorcycles may exit via Washburn (Street), if needed,” the city said.

Motorcycle parking will be available in the 100 blocks of South and North Main Street, with overflow sections on East and West Maumee, and in the public parking lots behind each block of downtown. All motorcycle contests will take place in the 200 block of North Main Street, and motorcycles can exit the contests via North Main and Front streets.

The following streets will be closed beginning at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, and will reopen at the conclusion of First Fridays:

    • Maumee Street from North Broad to North Winter streets.
    • Main Street from Church to Front streets.
    • Half block of Toledo Street.

Here’s the entertainment lineup for First Fridays

    • Bad Mojo, 5 to 9 p.m., West Maumee Street.
    • Soup Sandwich, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., Mammoth Distilling.

City leaders to welcome Moriyama delegation

Delegates and representatives from Moriyama, Japan, Adrian’s sister city, will also be part of the First Fridays celebrations on their first official day of visit to Adrian.

The Moriyama delegates are expected to remain in Adrian through Tuesday, Sept. 10, according to information from Adrian Mayor Angie Sword Heath. During their visit to the Maple City, they will take part in tours throughout the city and attend various functions including two college football games on Saturday at Siena Heights University and Adrian College.

Since 1989, relationships have been formed and friendships have been strengthened because of the sister city agreement signed in August of that year between Adrian and Moriyama . Michigan shares a sister state relationship with Shiga Prefecture, Japan’s version of a state. Moriyama is in Shiga.

The purpose of sister state and city agreements is to foster cultural understanding, former Adrian Mayor Jim Berryman previously told The Daily Telegram. It's much less economically focused and more so educationally focused.
