Cold case: DNA tech shows face of mystery dead man in Otero County, New Mexico, in 2021

Forensic DNA technology has generated a facial image that New Mexico investigators hope leads to the identification of man found dead three years ago in a cold case in Otero County .

The photo-like computerized sketch of the unknown man was recently publicized by the Twelfth Judicial District Attorney's Office in Alamogordo. Otero County is north of El Paso, Texas, across the New Mexico state line.

The image is a forensic approximation based on human remains found in Otero County on Aug. 17, 2021, the district attorney's office said. It is unknown how old the man was at the time of his death or when his death occurred. The location where the remains were found and a cause of death were not disclosed.

The district attorney's office said it worked with Parabon Nanolabs , a Virginia-based company that uses DNA and genealogical analysis to create models of faces of unknown victims and crime suspects.

The deceased man was described as between 25-52 years old, Latino with black hair, brown/hazel eyes, light brown or fair skin. The generated facial image shows what he would look like at about 40 years old, the district attorney's office said.

The man could be from the states surrounding New Mexico with family potentially in northern New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and California, the district attorney's office said. The forensic tests utilize DNA genealogical databases.
