Greetings from "Can't Wait For Saturday," your morning morsel of college football, courtesy of longtime Illini beat writer, AP Top 25 voter and Heisman state rep Bob Asmussen. He'll give you his views each day on the game he loves

College football fans who are frustrated with the massive changes in rosters might be about to get some relief.

The NCAA Division Council is looking into eliminating the spring transfer portal session. That would cut the amount of time for transfers to 30 days, down from the current 45. And it would make the entire block after the conclusion of the season, allowing teams to have a better handle on what their rosters will look like for the upcoming season.

I'm guessing the potential change will be a topic of discussion next time Illinois coach Bret Bielema talks to the media. Not sure where he will land on it.

This year's team is being helped considerably by the portal. The pickups include receiver Jahkari Franklin, defensive backs Terrance Brooks and Torrie Cox and offensive tackle J.C. Davis. They were precise and deliberate additions to fill critical holes in the lineup.

Would Illinois has lost a guy or two had the rule changes already happened? Maybe. But if everyone has to live with the same calendar, it will favor the better-prepared coaching staff. At this moment, Illinois has one of those staffs.
