BLOUNTVILLE — Quarterback Trey Frazier led a balanced offensive attack to help West Ridge to a 47-6 victory over Volunteer in the season opener for both teams on Friday at the Evelyn Rafalowski Athletic Complex.

Frazier was making his first appearance for the Wolves since Week 5 of last season. The senior QB accounted for four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground. He threw for 204 yards and rushed for another 70.

The 6A Wolves set the tone early, scoring on their first possession. For the game, West Ridge outgained Volunteer 450 yards to 162 in total offense. The West Ridge defense held Volunteer to just 10 first downs and forced four turnovers.

West Ridge led 20-0 at halftime, on a touchdown from Frazier to Trent Tatum and a Frazier rushing score. The Wolves grew the lead in the third quarter and pulled away down the stretch.

Volunteer got on the board in the fourth quarter when sophomore QB Jameson Mowell found junior Nathan Simpson on a fourth-and-28 for the score.

First-year head coach Mike Castle said he couldn’t fault the team’s effort.

“I have no problem with their effort. They gave it everything they had,” Castle said. “We still have a long way to go.”

Volunteer (0-1) will try to regroup at Lakeway Christian on Friday. Game time has been moved up to 7 p.m.
