Thunderstorms possible today; stronger storms likely Friday evening into Saturday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:04 AM EDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for central Indiana, indicating the possibility of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. The National Weather Service warns that lightning will be a primary threat with any thunderstorm that develops.

    Isolated Thunderstorms This Afternoon

An isolated thunderstorm may pop up across central Indiana today, particularly in counties such as Marion, Hamilton, Tippecanoe, Vigo, and Monroe. While severe weather is not expected, lightning poses a significant risk for those outdoors. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors if they hear thunder or see lightning.

“Lightning can strike several miles away from a storm,” the advisory cautioned. “Be aware of changing weather conditions and seek shelter if necessary.”

    Increased Thunderstorm Activity Expected Friday

The weather threat escalates on Friday afternoon through Saturday, with thunderstorms becoming more widespread across central Indiana. The National Weather Service notes the best chances for storms, and potentially isolated severe thunderstorms, will occur Friday evening and overnight. Strong winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes could accompany these storms, especially in areas stretching from Knox to Decatur counties.

While spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, residents should remain vigilant and prepare for possible severe weather.

    Stay Informed and Take Precautions

As storms could quickly become severe, the National Weather Service advises residents to monitor local weather reports closely and be prepared for rapid changes. Make sure to have a plan in place for sheltering if conditions worsen.
