Dangerous Heat and Flooding Pose Risks Across West Central and Southwest Florida

TAMPA — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:00 AM on September 5, 2024.

Heat Advisory in Effect This Afternoon

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tampa Bay/Ruskin has issued a Heat Advisory for portions of southwest and west central Florida, including areas such as Pinellas, Polk, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties. The advisory is in effect from noon today until 6 PM EDT this evening, with heat index values expected to reach up to 110 degrees.

Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and young children.

Ongoing Flood Warnings for Several Rivers

Several flood warnings remain in effect for the region due to elevated water levels from recent heavy rainfall:

    • Hillsborough River near Hillsborough River State Park is experiencing minor flooding, affecting Hillsborough County.
    • Manatee River near Myakka Head at SR 64 in Manatee County continues to see minor flooding.
    • Myakka River at Myakka River State Park in Sarasota County remains above flood stage, with minor flooding ongoing.
    • Little Manatee River at Wimauma at US 301 in Hillsborough County is also under a flood warning for minor flooding.

Motorists are urged not to drive around barricades or through flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. "Turn around, don't drown" remains critical advice when encountering flooded areas. Additionally, caution is advised near riverbanks due to potentially unstable ground conditions.

Flood Impacts at Myakka River State Park

At Myakka River State Park, water levels have reached 7.8 feet, surpassing the flood stage of 7.0 feet. The main road at the park is reported flooded, and conditions are expected to persist with the river forecasted to maintain levels near 7.8 feet through the weekend.
