    Celebrating Cinco de Mayo; Bradford Pears exchanged; mini-golf set to open

    Cinco de Mayo celebration held

    Hola Carolina in Hendersonville hosted a Cinco de Mayo celebration called Fiesta Hendersonville on May 5. The event was held at the Visitor's Center on South Main Street in downtown Hendersonville, according to a news release.

    The event was free and had song and dance performances to celebrate Latin culture. There were also Latin-themed food trucks and vendors.

    Bradford Pear exchange sees big turnout

    Hendersonville's first North Carolina Bradford Pear Bounty exchange was held May 4, and according to a news release, more than 200 trees were given out to replace Bradford Pear trees cut down by residents.

    The event was sponsored by the Hendersonville Tree Board. A total of 63 participants pre-registered and picked up 230 free trees after showing photos of the Bradford Pear trees they had cut down. The participants helped the N.C. Bradford Pear Bounty program by filling out a survey to provide information on why they wanted to participate in the exchange and also how they heard about the event.

    The 17 varieties of trees distributed included pawpaw, redbud, tulip poplar, Virginia pine, white oak, beech, service berry and sourwood, the release said. Tree Board member Mary Davis helped organize the event.

    Garden Jubilee set for Memorial Day weekend

    Hendersonville's 32nd annual Garden Jubilee will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 25-26 on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville. According to a news release, over 150 plant and craft vendors will be participating.

    The festival showcases an array of local and regional nurseries, orchards and crafters, presenting a diverse selection of annuals, perennials, shrubbery, herbs, trees, vegetables, hard-to-find plants, handmade creations and much more, the release said. Attendees can also gain insights into the latest tips and techniques for gardening tools and equipment from The Lowe’s Outdoor Experience located at the South end of the festival.

    Downtown shops and restaurants will be open and ready to cater to any shopping and dining needs and on May 25, the Hendersonville Farmers Market will also be open from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.. It's just a short walk away at the Seventh Avenue Historic Train Depot.

    Laura E. Corn Mini Golf to open for 1st season

    Laura E. Corn Mini Golf at Edwards Park, 904 N. Main St., will be reopening on May 10 to kick off the first full season of the golf course. The course will operate on a modified weekend schedule and then transition to extended hours, open every day of the week starting on May 25.

    Named in honor of Laura E. Corn, a longtime member of the mini golf staff and a cherished community figure, this 18-hole mini golf course that is ADA accessible is for all ages. Admission is $3 per round for adults (18 and older), $2 per round for youth (ages 3-17) and free (with paying adult) for toddlers (ages 2 and under).

    From May 10-24, hours are 3:30-9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. From May 25-Sept. 1, hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily, and from Sept. 2-Oct. 6, hours are 3:30-9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

    The last tee time is 9 p.m., and players must be off the course by 9:30 p.m.

    Arbor Day celebration to be held

    Hendersonville will be hosting an Arbor Day celebration and planting, an outdoor event scheduled for noon May 10 at Patton Park, 1730 Asheville Highway. Three red oak trees will be planted near the trail from Patton Park to the Oklawaha Greenway, along the fence of the old ballfield, according to a news release.

    City staff in Public Works will be present to help plant. The hour-long ceremony will include Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk, North Carolina Forest Service personnel, Four Seasons Rotary Club members, Hendersonville Tree Board members and any citizens who wish to attend.

    At the event, a North Carolina Forest Service Ranger will present awards from the Arbor Day Foundation to the city as part of the Tree City USA program. Volk will officially proclaim May 10 as Tree City Day in Hendersonville. The event is hosted by Four Seasons Rotary Club, which has sponsored Arbor Day events in Hendersonville since the first one was held in 1991.
