Projected Kansas City Chiefs 53-man roster for the 2024 NFL Season

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, all 32 teams face tough decisions on the league’s annual Cut Day, Tuesday, August 27. By 4 p.m. EDT, teams must trim their rosters from 90 to 53 players, finalizing their squads for the upcoming season.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, General Manager Brett Veach and Head Coach Andy Reid, along with the coaching staff, are in the midst of this process following the conclusion of preseason action. This critical period will determine the fate of many players’ careers and shape the team’s chances of capturing a third straight Super Bowl championship.

    Offense

On offense, the Chiefs’ quarterback situation is clear. Based on preseason performances and Reid’s history with his quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz will be the only two quarterbacks on the roster. The running back room also appears set with Isaiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Carson Steele. Steele shined through the Chiefs’ preseason action but especially left a lasting impression in their final preseason game. He is now more than likely to round out the running-back room.

Then there’s the wide receiver room, which features an exciting mix of talent this season. In all likelihood due to performances from the preseason, off-the-field questions, and injury concerns the Chiefs will be holding onto seven receivers. The seven receivers are expected to be Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Mecole Hardman, Nikko Remigio, Skyy Moore and Justin Watson. Among tight ends, the Chiefs are likely to carry four: Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Jared Wiley, and Irv Smith. This is a group shaped by offseason moves and past decisions.

Rounding out the offense, the Chiefs have their starting offensive line unit locked in. Based on what’s been shown in the preseason and their practices, it looks like the Chiefs will have nine offensive linemen heading into this season. The linemen are Jawaan Taylor, Trey Smith, Creed Humphrey, Joe Thuney, Kingsley Suamataia, Wanya Morris, Mike Caliendo, Lucas Niang, and Hunter Nourzad.

    Defense

The Chiefs’ defense is anchored by its defensive line, which is led by Chris Jones. He is likely to be joined by Derrick Nnadi, George Karlaftis, Tershawn Wharton, Mike Pennel, rookie Felix Anudike-Uzomah, and Malik Herring to round out this unit. The linebacker corps looks set with Nick Bolton anchoring the middle, supported by Drue Tranquill and Leo Chenal. Then to back them up it looks to be Jack Cochrane, Cam Jones, and Cole Christensen.

In the secondary, despite some injury concerns, the Chiefs will likely hold onto 13 players, including corners Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, Nazeeh Johnson, and Keith Taylor. Then the safeties will likely include Justin Reid, Jaden Hicks, Bryan Cook, Deon Bush, Chamarri Conner, Nic Jones and Kelvin Joseph. The defense a whole didn’t have the greatest preseason, but everyone on this list has a proven track record with the team already or has shown enough during preseason action to earn them a spot on this year’s team.

    Special Teams

The special teams unit remains stable, with Harrison Butker as the kicker. Matt Araiza is set to take over punting duties after Tommy Townsend’s departure and James Winchester will continue as the long-snapper. These three players will form the core of the special teams unit.

    Final Thoughts

As the Chiefs finalize their 53-man roster, they may also consider adding players released by other teams to the practice squad. Positions like the defensive line or running back room could see additional depth, ensuring the team maintains the necessary versatility and talent to pursue another championship.
