All eyes in the college football recruiting world will be on one wide receiver this week. Kaliq Lockett, an elite five star receiver talent from Sachse, Texas will finally announce where he's committing on Wednesday August 5th. He's officially narrowed his favorite schools down to Alabama, LSU, Texas, Florida State, and Texas A&M, but which one will he choose? And what makes him so special?

Kaliq Lockett, Elite Five Star Talent

Lockett has long been considered a top notch recruit, dating back to 2022 when the first Top 100 lists for the 2025 recruiting class began to emerge. Back then he had not quite blown up for a full high school football season, but what little he did flash was elite.

Two years later he has posted two incredibly efficient seasons showcasing his "NFL level ball skills" as some experts call them and track speed that combines to make him one of the most unstoppable players in all of high school football as you can see in the highlight post below.

Lockett's ability to high point the ball, run crisp routes that create easy separation, and his unbelievable 6'7" wingspan make him a tough wide receiver to handle for any of the best defensive backs. Wherever he lands he should push for immediate snaps as a breakout true freshman star.

Likely Landing Spot for Kaliq Lockett

For multiple years now many projected that Kaliq Lockett would eventually land with the Texas Longhorns. He's been taking unofficial visits with them for two and a half years, seeing them more than any other team. And in recent weeks major sites like On3 Sports have put in official predictions that he's perhaps leaning that way. However, his recruitment is clearly not over--yet.

On3, the same site still predicting Lockett to the Longhorns, shared a quote from him this week on his decision, and the description of his commitment choice does not sound like Texas:

"The school that I chose is the best way to be one of the best receivers in the country and to be a first round receiver.

Texas did just send Xavier Worthy to the first round and Adonai Mitchell to the second of this spring's 2024 NFL Draft. And thanks to Steve Sarkisian, Texas wide receivers certainly look like some of the best in the country again. However, prior to Xavier Worthy it had been 20 years since another Longhorns pass catcher was selected in round one. Same goes for Florida State and Texas A&M (two of his alleged finalist schools). The Seminoles and Aggies have both had just one wide receiver selected inside round one since 2010.

LSU and Alabama on the other hand both consistently develop wide receivers, see them produce at elite levels in college, and then go on to find immense success after quite often being early draft picks. The Crimson Tide have had eight first round pick wide receivers since 2010. The Tigers have had five .

Both schools look like great potential fits, but based on multiple public reports (and what I've personally heard) just a month ago Lockett's two "tier one" schools were Texas and Alabama. And unless something's changed LSU hasn't likely vaulted ahead of them. In fact, Kaliq Lockett had the chance to join the Tigers before when fellow five star Dakorien Moore was committed there, a friend he's known since middle school. Yet he did not commit then.

Given how vocal 2025 five star quarterback recruit Keelon Russell has been in Lockett's recruitment, it would not be a surprise at all if Lockett ends up with the Crimson Tide. Kalen DeBoer just sent a trio of wide receivers to the NFL in the first, second, and third rounds in the same class. There's clear opportunity to step in day one as a starter next year. Texas and LSU are likely technically still in the mix, but recent signs have me (and a few others) leaning Alabama. We'll find out Wednesday.
