Position Preview: Taking a look at SMU’s depth chart at quarterback

As summer nears its end and SMU gets set for fall camp the roster and depth chart are starting to come together. By utilizing the transfer portal and another strong recruiting class the Mustangs are putting themselves in position to compete in their first season in the ACC.

As Rhett Lashlee & Co. make their move into the power rankings, On The Pony Express provides an in-depth look at the roster with our Position Preview series. We now take a look at quarterback and the possible depth chart.

Quarterback

1. Preston Stone (RJr.)

2. Kevin Jennings (RSo.)

3. Keldric Luster (RFr.)

4. Tyler Aronson (Fr.)

SMU has a completely homegrown quarterback room, a rarity in college football these days, and two of them have starting experience. Stone led the way as the Mustangs reached the American Athletic Conference championship game while it was Jennings who started and helped win the game.

But with Stone’s injury history the Mustangs have a legitimate backup with starter potential in Jennings. It is likely that there will be at least some kind of competition between the two in fall camp. Even so, the job is still Stone’s as he comes off the leg injury that cost him the end of the season.

Stone was in the middle of an historic performance when he broke his leg late in the first half against Navy in the regular season finale. Jennings made his first career start in the AAC championship game and his second in the Fenway Bowl. He also has come into games over the past two years at crucial times for some key victories.

Behind them are a pair of youngsters in Luster and Aronson. Luster got some playing time last season, completing a pair of passes for 23 yards while rushing for 12 yards, and Aronson was on campus this spring to get a head start on his development.
