LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier says new in-helmet communication is 'awesome'

The 2024 college football season will feature quite a few significant changes, but one that has flown under the radar a bit is the introduction of in-helmet, coach-to-player radio communication.

The technology has existed in the NFL for quite a while, but signals previously had to be given directly from the sideline in the college game. Now, it will be much easier to communicate calls to players on the field.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is one of the players who will make use of the technology this season, which he called “awesome.”

“The helmet comms have been awesome,” Nussmeier said. “Obviously, you still have to make sure you’re aware of the signals and things like that in case they go out at any moment. But it’s definitely an advantage, being able to have that communication with coach (Joe) Sloan and making sure we’re in the correct play and running the right thing.

“There are also schematic advantages that will be used that y’all will see eventually with that. It’s been awesome. I think it’s a huge help and it’s been really, really good for us.”

The Tigers have a lot of change on offense, including a new coordinator and two new top receivers in addition to a new starting quarterback. They’ll hope this change makes that transition just a bit easier.
