Courtland Sutton shares his stance on highly-paid teammate Pat Surtain

The Denver Broncos made cornerback Pat Surtain the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history on Wednesday with a four-year, $96 million extension.

A few hours later, Surtain and wide receiver Courtland Sutton were named two of Denver’s team captains for the 2024 season.

Sutton was made available to media members after practice and he gave his stance on Surtain’s mega extension.

“It was inevitable,” Sutton said. “[He] was going to get that bag at some point because Pat is the best corner in the NFL. I don’t care what anybody says. I don’t care about anybody’s lists. I don’t care about none of the sports channels. I don’t care about none of the people that sit up there and talk all day because they watch a whole bunch of TV. I don’t care about none of that. I watch Pat work every single day.

“I watch Pat go to work and go to battle on Sundays and whatever day we’re playing. He’s proven it. Week in and week out, he’s proven that he’s the best at what he does and I’m just happy for him to be able to have that next step in his career. I don’t think — nothing’s going to change about him. He’s going to continue to be Pat Surtain II. ‘Mr. Lockdown’, ‘Mr. Strapup’, however you want to call it. I’m very happy for him.”

Surtain, a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro, was named the league’s best cornerback in an offseason poll of executives, coaches and scouts earlier this year. Several of the NFL’s top wide receivers also ranked him No. 1 this summer. So it’s not just a biased teammate making the claim. His peers agree: PS2 is CB1.
