    Venice Memorial Day events set

    VENICE — Multiple Memorial Day events are planned for the area, including two in Venice.

    Patriots Park

    The oldest is the one set for 10 a.m. Monday at Patriots Park in Venice, complete with patriotic music, keynote speakers, a parade of colors and a rifle salute.

    Joe Reynolds will speak on “Just a Common Soldier” and Henry Arent’s speech topic will be “Renew Patriotism.” Many groups participate in this ceremony, including:

    Bay Indies

    In what is a growing Memorial Day event, the community of Bay Indies will have a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 950 Ridgewood Aven.

    Following the ceremony will be a lunch for members of the community. The lunch will not be open to the public.

    Sarasota

    The city of Sarasota’s annual Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday.

    The parade will start at Main Street and Osprey Avenue and conclude at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park, at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue. A public ceremony will be held there at approximately 11 a.m.

    The keynote speaker will be Michael Tollerton, a West Point graduate.

    The parade will include performances by the Sarasota Military Academy band and participation from local law enforcement agencies, first responders, color guards, veterans’ groups, community organizations and local dignitaries.
