Ted Leonsis reiterates he wants to buy Nationals: 'Let's do this'

Ted Leonsis owning the Nats is, indeed, still a thing he’d like to investigate.

Leonsis told the Junkies last month that he would expect to make another offer to the Lerner family at some point, noting the desire to own the team and the programming slot it would fill on his Monumental Sports Network.

Well, he doubled down Friday, telling DC News Now’s Alex Flum that he’s still in that same mode.

“Just trying to remind people that we think we know how to build and manage a great operation, but scale really matters,” he said while speaking to Flum prior to Mystics-Fever on Friday night. “Our Wizards and Mystics are in a rebuild like the Nationals, and what you need is the investment and commitment, and the ability to channel your revenues into every part of the organization.”

Leonsis buying the Nats would give him three of the four major sports franchises in DC, plus the Mystics, which is something no one can claim – in fact, very few can even say they own three anywhere in the U.S., although the other team in town, the Commanders, is owned by one of those in Josh Harris.

And he’s ready for the challenge.

“When you’re in a big market like DC, you’ll be compared to and compete with places like Los Angeles and New York, and I think many hands would make light work,” Ted said. “I love the game, so I'm hoping that at some point we can make an offer where the Lerner family says, ‘yes, let's go do this together.’ I'm not shy to say I think it's the right thing for the team, the franchise, and the players, and let's do it."
