The Washington Capitals made waves across the NHL with a blockbuster trade on Wednesday, acquiring Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings in a 1-for-1 deal for goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

This deal fills key needs for both teams, with Washington needing help on offense and the Kings desperate for stability between the pipes. But for general manager Brian MacLellan, Dubois brings more than just another name that can produce.

    He brings promise.

"We are thrilled to announce the addition of Pierre-Luc to the Caps organization," MacLellan said of the trade. "This acquisition brings in a talented 25-year-old with immense potential to become a top-tier center in the NHL."

Dubois is coming off a tough year with the Kings, who acquired him in a long-term sign-and-trade deal last summer. He managed just 40 points in 82 games while receiving just 12:56 minutes per game at 5-on-5.

Prior to this past season, where he didn't fit in with L.A.'s systems, he posted back-to-back 60-point campaigns and showcased his ability.

It's that skillset that MacLellan believes will pay off big for Washington, who expects the 6-foot-4, 225-pound center to take on a bigger role under head coach Spencer Carbery.

"With his size, exceptional skating, and high hockey IQ, we are confident he will thrive in our organization with increased responsibility and opportunity," MacLellan noted.

Considering the veteran presence in D.C., as well as how fellow young players like Dylan Strome have found their footing with the organization, Dubois may just pay off.

Though his $8.5 million cap hit is a lot to take on, the deal also gets Kuemper's $5.25 million cap hit off the books for the next three years, so technically, it's only $3.25 million extra per year. It also allows for Hunter Shepard and Clay Stevenson to take the next step in their respective careers.

At the end of the day, though, D.C. hopes that Dubois can become what Strome did: a top center and producer who continues to elevate his game.
