Trade Grades: Flames Trade Andrew Mangiapane To The Capitals

The Flames keep tearing it down and the Capitals keep trying to add mediocre pieces so they’re not totally terrible while Alex Ovechkin chases the goal record. That sums it up pretty well, right? Andrew Mangiapane has been dealt to Washington. With that said, let’s hand out some trade grades and analyze this transaction.

    Calgary Flames: Grade A

This feels like a home run deal for Craig Conroy and the rest of the front office in Calgary. I really don’t know how they got a second round pick here. Let’s really think about this. Not only did Calgary clear $5.8 million in cap space, they also get a second round pick. That part is obvious but I want you to think about this.

If Calgary hangs on and sells Mangiapane at the deadline. They probably would have had to retain on that $5.8 number and still probably would have gotten a second if he was balling out. Mangiapane also had one year remaining on his contract and was never going to be a fit for the rebuild. This realistically might be Conroy’s best deal yet.

Pierre-Luc Dubois Trade Grades: Washington and Los Angeles

    Washington Capitals: Grade C-

While I understand it, this still feels like an overpay. Especially when you consider that Red Wings gave up a second round pick to just get rid of Jake Walman. The Capitals then turn around and give up a second round pick for a guy that has been down in the dumps.

Mangiapane , 28, had 14 goals and 26 assists last year. That’s with 16 minutes of ice time. The only argument for even making this trade is that the magic of that 35 goal season back in 2021-22 season is still in there. The problem is that season is looking like an anomaly. He’s never hit 20 goals in a season in any other year.

The only defense Washington has here is that it looks like TJ Oshie is done. When I say done, I mean LTIR probably not going to play again done. That right there saves $5.7 million, which I presume is now being shifted to Mangiapane. Outside of that, this deal really doesn’t make much sense.
