DISNEY ON THE SIDE wishes on stars at Broadway on the Side
ODGEN — Broadway on the Side takes their musical revue format to the Magic Kingdom with Disney on the Side. As my four-year-old daughter expressed, they performed all the movies. Drawing on musical numbers from the dense Disney musical canon, most decades are featured in this performance. Director Megan Worthen Nelson informed me that the performers auditioned with the songs they wanted, and selections proceeded for the combined repertoire. As a millennial, the show reminded me of growing up and singing along with the “Disney Greatest Hits” volumes published on CD. This show includes the appropriate additions from the 21st century.
“Fairly pretty” MARY POPPINS at Hopebox
KAYSVILLE — Mary Poppins is flying onto the Hopebox Theatre stage directed by Addie Holman and delivers familiarity, warmth, and humanity. Mary Poppins the musical uses music by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman from the 1964 Disney film adaptation with new music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The book is by Julian Fellowes and reimagines the context for many of the film’s original songs. The story remains centered on George and Winifred Banks, their children Jane and Michael, and the perfect nanny Mary Poppins whose arrival influences them for good. As noted in previous reviews, the musical adaptation departs from the award-winning film making this adaptation distinct for the stage.
