Waukee gets funding for first public art piece under new plan to bring color to city
Waukee has received a grant for the city's first public art project since adopting a public art master plan last year. City officials want to use the plan to guide development of Waukee's artistic cultural identity, including by adding some colorful features to the city's major thoroughfares. The first public art project under the plan — a piece on Tallgrass Pond along Grand Prairie Parkway called "Walk in the Park" — does not yet have a contract in place with an artist.

Iowa Republicans, Democrats plan presidential debate watch parties
DES MOINES, Iowa — On Thursday night, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will meet on a stage in Atlanta forthe first presidential debate of 2024. Dallas County Republicans are hosting a Trump convoy and watch party. They will meet in the Younkers parking lot at Valley West Mall at 6 p.m. Thursday. From there they'll make their way to the West Des Moines Marriott on Jordan Creek Parkway, where supporters will watch the debate. There will also be sign-ups for voter registration, door knocking and poll workers.

ISU Intern Helping in the Perry Community with Mental Health
An intern with the Iowa State University Extension & Outreach in Dallas County shares the necessity of public gatherings in relation to mental health. Laurel Waterman is one of two interns that were hired as part of the ISU Rising Star program to work alongside the Perry Chamber of Commerce. Waterman tells Raccoon Valley Radio that following the January 4th shooting, Dallas County was looking to bring in more resources, which led to the decision to bring on a couple of interns.

State fire deaths right about average midway through the year
State Fire Marshal Dan Wood says there have been 15 fatal fires as we approach the halfway mark of this year. “We have between usually 30 and 40 deaths a year you know some years a little bit more but we’re right about where we usually are this time of year,” he says. Wood says one issue he’s seen more of are fires that are started by people who smoke or those who smoke while on oxygen. “Those things seem to come up more and more each year. So, you know, it’s sometimes hard to reach those people because they not typically, you know on social media they’re not you know, getting out and being active. But the smoking and smoking well on oxygen also the ones that are really getting my attention each year,” Wood says. There are a lot of education efforts on the importance of smoke alarms, and he says they’ve seen some results.

Urbandale’s State of the City Address, new flag unveiling happening today
The city of Urbandale is holding its State of the City Address and unveiling its new city flag today at Urbandale Public Library. Urbandale Mayor Robert Andeweg will deliver an update on the city’s progress and key initiatives, including its new comprehensive plan, infrastructure projects like the $118 million I-35/80 Hickman Road Interchange reconstruction and the human services strategic plan, a news release said. Automated Traffic Enforcement Project Resumes in Des Moines
(Des Moines, IA) -- The city of Des Moines resumes its Automated Traffic Enforcement program. The Des Moines Police Department says, as of 12:01am on Thursday, June 27th, traffic cameras will resume issuing tickets. DMPD will resume setting up mobile radar locations as of July 1st.
