PRELIMINARY HEARINGS HELD IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING CASE. Preliminary hearings were held in Fond du Lac County court last Friday for the mother of a 12-year-old girl who allegedly trafficked the girl and the man who allegedly paid to sexually assault the girl. Thirty-one-year-old Elia Antonio waived her hearing and was bound over for trial. Thirty-three-year-old Juan Carlos Rocha Mejia’s hearing was rescheduled for July 25th because he still doesn’t have an attorney. Rocha Mejia was arrested during a SWAT operation on May 19th after Sheriff’s deputies responded to a Town of Oakfield home. The girl showed up there after breaking away from Rocha Mejia who had her in a van was trying to tie her down, blindfold, and sexually assault her. According to the criminal complaint the victim’s mother claimed Rocha Mejia intimidated and threatened her into turning the girl over to him.
Rain and storms likely throughout Tuesday
It's a wet start to this Tuesday with a round of showers and storms rolling through southeast Wisconsin. So far, the steadiest rain has been in our northern counties where most of Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties have seen steady rain since 3 AM. The Milwaukee/Waukesha and areas south hasn't seen as much steady rain or storms but still plenty of scattered showers.

A downtown Fond du Lac restaurant has closed it’s doors. Copper Cock tavern closed June 30th. The owner posted on the restaurant’s website the decision to close the restaurant, thanking family and the Fond du Lac community.

Charter Communications to close Regional Support Center, affecting 122 employees in Fond du Lac
FOND DU LAC – Charter Communications will close the Regional Support Center at its Fond du Lac location this summer, with 122 total employees slated to lose their jobs. According to a letter the company filed with the Department of Workforce Development June 28, the closure will be effective Aug. 27, and does not affect the rest of the facility at 165 Knights Way.

The Fond du Lac Symphonic Band, under the direction of Evan Chancellor will present its traditional Americana Concert at Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac on Thursday, the 4th of July, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Dan Fee will sing God Bless America, and he will be joined by Norm Francis in a duet: From Sea to Shining Sea. Additional patriotic selections include Morton Gould’s American Salute, O’er the Land of the Free by Vinson, and the Armed Forces Salute. American pops and standards will be featured in An Ellington Festival, Irving Berlin Showstoppers, a Tribute to Benny Goodman, Gershwin!, and Pop Rock Legends: Elvis. The concert will conclude with the official march of the United States: Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa. The Band’s performance will be followed by fireworks on the lakefront at 9:30 p.m.. The Symphonic Band’s summer concerts in Fond du Lac are sponsored by the City of Fond du Lac. Next on the summer schedule is the Symphonic Band at Buttermilk Creek Park on July 10 with the theme: “A Night at the Theatre,” followed by a band performance at Campbellsport on July 11. There is no concert scheduled for Wednesday, July 3 at Buttermilk Creek Park.
7-2-24 fdl city council gets first look at budget
The Fond du Lac city council got it’s first look at how next year’s city budget is shaping up. City manager Joe Moore gave a budget overview at last week’s council meeting. Moore says money in the capital improvement plan will be proposed for housing development in the city. Moore says the budget will also continue to invest in the city’s stormwater system. Moore says he anticipates a decrease in the tax rate.
Fourth of July weekend brings awareness about boating under the influence
FOND DU LAC – The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office will be out in force to educate people on boating safety as they head out on the water this holiday weekend. Operation Dry Water is a year-round national campaign involving outreach and enforcement regarding boating under the influence, and heightens awareness annually for three days: this year, that falls on July 4 through 6.
