SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local adaptive baseball program is taking a step toward expansion to improve the experience for all players.

Lackawanna Challenger Division held a ceremonial ribbon cutting Sunday at Harmon Field in South Scranton.

The plan is to turn an existing building into a full-fledged clubhouse.

The facility will feature a sensory room to accommodate children with autism.

The clubhouse will also provide space for parents and nurses to tend to the medical needs of challenger athletes right at the complex. Currently, that is not an option.

“They actually have to leave the field. They have to leave the grounds. They can’t finish the game. They can’t participate in the after-game festivities. Now, because of the clubhouse, they could receive medical attention here and get right back out on the game,” said Scranton Rotary Club Member Joe Riccardo.

The Rotary Club helped raise funds for the clubhouse and to upgrade the restrooms and baseball field.

Organizers hope to break ground on the project in September.
