LAURINBURG, N.C. (WBTW) — A 16-year-old has been charged with murder in connection with last week’s shooting and ATV crash in Laurinburg, police said on Monday.

The teenager was taken to a juvenile detention facility. The charge is in the death of Zahquan Thyzee Stewart, who police said was shot and suffered injuries in an ATV crash.

Officers responded to the area of Deluca and Berry Streets at about 8 p.m. Thursday for a call of shots fired and found a 14-year-old boy lying next to the road who said he didn’t know if he had been shot or not, police said.

Officers also found Stewart dead in the bushes next to an ATV that had crashed into a tree. They learned that a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound had already been taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle.

Investigators determined that all three had been riding the ATV together on Deluca Street and were passed by two other males who shot at the ATV, hitting the 13-year-old victim and causing the driver, Stewart, to lose control and strike a tree.

The 13 and 14-year-olds were taken to a hospital in critical condition, though no update on their conditions were immediately available.
