TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Local leaders in Taylorville are addressing rumors over an alleged assault that happened earlier this year between students within the school district.

“The school district is aware of a concern in the community regarding the behavior and safety of individual children,” Superintendent of the Taylorville School District Brandi Bruley said in a release.

“We are grateful for our close relationship with law enforcement that works to keep us apprised of situations they can share with us, and for the community’s communication about their children and what they know,” Bruley added.

Illinois State Police confirmed with WCIA their agents investigated an alleged assault that took place on a Taylorville School District Bus after the Christian County Sheriff’s Office contacted them in February. They then submitted their findings to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Taylorville Police Department said in a statement that a juvenile was charged in relation to the incident. WCIA reached out to the State’s Attorney Thursday morning, but has not heard back yet.

Both the school district and police department said the amount of information that can be released is extremely limited by state law as the alleged perpetrator and victim are both minors.

“This is standard for all juvenile criminal matters outside of traffic offenses,” the Taylorville Police Department said. “As such, it is understandable that people may feel that this matter is being ignored, because when communication is lacking, it is natural to assume the worst.”
