    UPDATE: Sheriff’s Office identifies deputy shot in Iroquois County

    4:45 p.m. update:

    The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a prayer vigil on the east lawn of the County Courthouse at 7 p.m. Monday. The Sheriff’s office invited the public to attend to pray for Corporal Schreiber’s full recovery.


    Update at 2:30 p.m.

    The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of its deputy who was shot in Iroquois County Sunday night.

    In a press release on its Facebook page, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it was assisting the Iroquois Couty Sheriff’s Office Sunday night. While confronting a suspect, Corporal Brandon Schreiber, a five-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office was shot by the suspect.

    Officials added that Schreiber was initially taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital but was later flown to Carle Hospital in Urbana. Schreiber remains in critical condition as of 2:15 p.m.

    Officials did not include any information about the incident that resulted in Schreiber being shot, saying the Illinois State Police are leading the investigation. ISP said the investigation is ongoing and they have no further information to release at this time.

    The Schreiber family has requested privacy as they try to process these events, Newton County officials said. Anyone who wants to send a card in the mail can send it to the Newton County Coroner’s Office, located at 204 East Seymour Street in Kentland, Indiana.

    “We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and prayers from our law enforcement families, both from Indiana and Illinois, as well as from our community,” officials added. “Your kindness is deeply appreciated and means more than words can express.”


    Update at 6:30 a.m.

    The Newton County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one of their deputies was involved in the incident in Sheldon and was shot and critically injured.

    Illinois State Police is handling the investigation.


    SHELDON, Ill. (WCIA) – The Iroquois County Coroner has confirmed to WCIA that a deputy was shot Sunday evening in the Sheldon area.

    The coroner is not sure of what county jurisdiction the deputy is a part of. That deputy was airlifted to an area hospital.

    Our news team has also reached out to the Iroquois County Sherriff’s Office for more information. We have not received any official information from them yet.

    Illinois State Police did confirm they are in the process of gathering information regarding the incident. They said there is no threat to the public and full details may not be available until Monday.
