BROOKFIELD, Ill. — One of the oldest male bottlenose dolphins in human care will celebrate a milestone this weekend, and he’s one of Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s very own.

    ‘Lucky’ is turning 50.

The dolphin received his name after being rescued in 1977 off the coast of Texas from being entangled in a fishing net. Due to his injuries and age, ‘Lucky’ was deemed unable to return to the wild.

Since arriving at Brookfield Zoo Chicago in 1990, ‘Lucky’ has survived cancer and continues treatment for that and other age-related issues.

Zoo guests can help celebrate Lucky’s birthday all weekend by participating in several events. Guests can sing “Happy Birthday,” sign cards, color pictures, and contribute by symbolically adopting Lucky online.
