IOWA — We have one more hot and humid day to get through today, but a strong cold front is moving this way and will bring rain and relief from the high heat.

Today’s temperatures will be back in the upper 80s to low 90s this afternoon and heat index values will make it feel closer to 100 at times this afternoon.

Increasing low-level moisture and upper-level moisture with the combination of the lift associated with the incoming front may lead to the development of spotty isolated storms in north central Iowa north of Ames from 3 PM on. Early on in storm development, a few storms may produce damaging winds and large hail. The tornado threat remains low.

The main front will slowly cross the state from the northwest to the southeast from 6 PM on Thursday to 4 AM on Friday.

This will bring heavy areas of rain through some communities through the night. We may see more than an inch of rain in spots.

The front will bring a significant drop in temperatures, but you’ll especially notice the lower humidity and dewpoints.
