John Lee Hellams, 54, of Wichita Falls, was booked into the Wichita County Jail on Saturday, July 27, 2024, and charged with the second-degree felony offense of criminal attempt to commit aggravated sexual assault. He is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.

According to the arrest affidavit, officers with the Wichita Falls Police Department responded to a welfare check in the 1300 block of Travis Street just before midnight on Saturday, July 27.

When officers arrived on the scene, they said they made contact with the victim, who told them she had been assaulted at 1301 Lamar Street just before they arrived.

The affidavit said the victim told police that Hellams told her to lie down and be quiet or he was going to kill her. She told officers after she laid down, Hellams got on top of her and attempted to “rape” her.

According to the affidavit, the victim told officers that Hellams groped her during the attempted assault. She said she had to fight her way out from underneath him and that when she was trying to do so, Hellams choked her almost to the point where she lost consciousness.

Officers said the victim told them she felt like she was going to die. She also told police that during the assault, Hellams grabbed a broken “meth pipe” and stabbed her in the chest, leaving an abrasion before he left her at the scene.

Police said that during the investigation, Hellams showed up at the scene wearing the clothing and riding the same colored bike the victim had described.

The affidavit said Hellams made a statement about being with the victim at the location where the assault occurred. Officers said Hellams told them he was there because he was trying to end their relationship.

According to the affidavit, the victim told police she wanted to press charges and requested a protective order against Hellams.
