SILVER CITY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Silver City never has been nearly as big as the name implies. It is at best just a village in Humphreys County between Yazoo City and Belzoni. And then, the night of March 24, 2023, a tornado almost the size of Silver City sat right down on top of the center of it.

“Terror. When we realized the tornado was going to hit, I don’t think there’s. The closest word that I know would be terror. I was terrified. My children were terrified,” said Angela Richardson, who I’ve gotten to know over the past year.

Richardson’s house was still standing but unlivable after the tornado. She and a lot of her neighbors have been sort of adopted by organizations and individuals and others who stepped up to fill the gap after insurance and FEMA. But the biggest gap is the emptiness where Silver City used to be.

It is obvious a year later that Silver City will never again look like it did a year ago. Much of it is still wide open. Some of the properties are even still the same today as they were the day after the tornado.

But progress has been made. Richardson is back in her house. Many of her neighbors are, too, thanks to people who who have come here and pitched in with their expertise and pitched in the materials in lots of cases.

Silver City reminds me of some of the worst hit places on the coast after Hurricane Katrina. It took the coast 10 years to regain normalcy. It could easily take the Delta and northeast Mississippi that long to get standing tall again.
