One hundred eighty-five tennis players traveled from as far south as Vancouver and as far north as Bellingham, making their way to the Snohomish Valley to see who would come out on top at the 9th Annual Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Columbia Athletic Club- Silver Lake. When the smoke cleared, among those holding the coveted champion T-shirts was Edmonds-Woodway High School sophomore Nalu Akiona, who teamed with 2A Singles State Champion Cole Balen of Archbishop Murphy to grab the Boys Gold Doubles title. In addition, Balen grabbed the title in the Boys Gold Singles Division.
RON CAPPS WALKS AWAY FROM EXPLOSIVE INCIDENT
As a student of the game, Ron Capps knows the inherent dangers of driving a nitro-burning Funny Car. Sunday, outside of Seattle, Wash., the three-time NHRA Funny Car driver was given a reminder. During the first round at the NHRA Northwest Nationals, Capps’ NAPA Auto Parts-sponsored Toyota Funny Car exploded...

Sunday News & Notes from the NHRA Northwest Nationals
With an early 10:30 a.m. start, the teams seem excited to run in the cooler conditions after two days of midafternoon heat. There's a spotty chance of sprinkles, but hey, it's the Northwest, where rain is a way of life. The guy on the news last night promised, "It'll be nothing to ruin your day," and I'm holding him to that. It actually sprinkled lightly on the pre-race ceremony but stopped after a few minutes of people casting angry eyes at the sky. As we prepare to fire up for round one of Top Fuel, it's about 70 degrees and there's a solid cloud cover after two days of bright, blue skies, making things even more comfortable for now but it's supposed to warm up in the afternoon.
Antron Brown Looks Ahead to Sonoma After Seattle Outing
Coming off of his second win of the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season, Antron Brown was excited to return to Pacific Raceways this weekend for the 35th annual NHRA Northwest Nationals, an event he’s won four times in the past. A fifth event win wasn’t in the cards for the talented Top Fuel pilot and team owner, however, as Brown made an uncharacteristic early exit in the first round of competition today at Pacific Raceways.
The Moose is Loose: Mariners prospect Michael Morales finds his stride
The Mariners made a splash move in the 2024 draft, taking high school pitcher Ryan Sloan with their second-round pick, 55th overall. Sloan comes with all the bona fides you’d want to see in an early-round high school draft pick: he’s got a high-octane fastball, he’s built like a walk-in refrigerator, and he seems almost blissfully ignorant of the talent he’s been granted in his right arm (witness him talking about discovering his late-fade changeup like he found a dollar on the street).
Jeg Coughlin Jr. Collects Third Win Of The NHRA Drag Racing Season
Jeg Coughlin Jr. and the SCAG Power Equipment / Outlaw Mile Hi Light Beer machine rallied to their third win of the season Sunday at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways just outside of Seattle. Jeg Jr.’s 68th Pro Stock win was also the fifth consecutive victory from the...
