( WJET/WFXP )– A new era is set to begin for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The team announced Wednesday they’ve named Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback for week one against the Atlanta Falcons after competing this offseason with fellow newcomer Justin Fields.

Fields will be the team’s backup with Kyle Allen serving as the third-stringer after making it through the final round of roster cuts Tuesday.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin informed the players on Thursday calling it a difficult decision but not in a negative way thanks in part to Fields’ athleticism.

“The decision was difficult because of what they’re capable of doing. The decision was difficult because of how they’ve conducted themselves as opposed to the things they fall short in, in terms of capability or negative conduct,” Tomlin said to reporters

This is Wilson’s 13th season in the NFL and first with the Steelers.
