Commanders Cut Mason Brooks Ahead of Joint Practice

The Washington Commanders took another step in their ongoing efforts to reshape their offensive line by releasing offensive lineman Mason Brooks on Wednesday, just ahead of their scheduled joint practice with the Miami Dolphins. This move is part of the broader strategy by new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn to rebuild and strengthen the team’s offensive line—a task that often requires more than one season to fully accomplish.
Mason Brooks, who went undrafted out of Ole Miss in 2023, spent last season on the Commanders' practice squad. Despite building a modest following among fans, Brooks struggled to secure a permanent spot on the team. Throughout training camp, he was one of several linemen who were given reps at various positions, including offensive tackle, as the coaching staff explored different options to maximize the unit's potential. However, it appears that Brooks did not meet the coaching staff's expectations for a long-term role on the roster.
The decision to release Brooks was first reported by ESPN's John Keim, who also noted that the Commanders are expected to sign quarterback Trace McSorley . McSorley, whose last regular-season action came in 2022 with the Arizona Cardinals , will join Washington's quarterback rotation as they prepare for the remainder of the preseason. His addition comes as undrafted rookie Sam Hartman recovers from a shoulder injury sustained in the preseason opener against the New York Jets .
As the Commanders continue their training camp and preseason preparations, the release of Brooks underscores the team’s commitment to refining their roster and making the necessary adjustments to improve their performance in the upcoming NFL season. With Peters and Quinn at the helm, the Commanders remain focused on building a competitive team, even as difficult roster decisions are made.
